Sensors in each ground-floor room and possibly the upstairs landing are wired back to the control panel, which can be tucked away in a cupboard or attic. A weatherproof siren and flashing strobe on the outside of the house will alert neighbours of a break-in. The system is armed and disarmed using a keypad located conveniently close to the front or back door. Remote control key-fobs are also available for arming and disarming.

Hardwired systems can be installed in most houses with virtually no decorative disturbance, and have the advantage that they are practically maintenance-free.
